AMES, Iowa - The No. 14 Iowa State volleyball squad made quick work of the Kansas Jayhawks Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum, sweeping the Jayhawks 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-11) in 67 minutes. The crowd of 1,760 saw the Cyclones improve to 17-3 overall and remain on top of the Big 12 standings with an 8-1 record. The loss drops Kansas to 13-9 and 1-8 in conference competition.
"We really served tough and we broke them down serve-and-pass wise," head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "When you struggle passing it is really tough to get into a rhythm most of the night. A lot of players, (Jamie) Straube and (Kristen) Hahn, served the ball really tough and low into the tape. That is a tough ball to pass. We were really aggressive with our serves and when you get them thinking about short and deep, that helps out."
The Cyclones took control of the third set from the onset. Iowa State used an early 8-2 run to take control of the set and used efficient offense and stingy defense to take the final set. The Cyclones hit .360 in the third and restricted KU to -.033 on the evening. Carly Jenson led the Cyclones with four kills in the set on seven attacks.
Iowa State tied a season high with 10 service aces and the Cyclones' 10.5 team blocks, including a career-high four block assists from setter Alison Landwehr, was the third time in four matches that Iowa State reached double-figures. Iowa State's .315 hitting percentage was the ninth time hitting over .300 for the Cyclones in 2011.
"The offense becomes more predictable with good serving and then teams with good middles get pressured to pass to their middles," Johnson-Lynch noted. "That helped our blocking schemes a lot."
Jenson led Iowa State with eight kills and contributed 11 digs on the night. Tenisha Matlock collected seven kills on only nine attacks and Rachel Hockaday led the Cyclones with 13 digs. Straube posted six kills and four service aces for the second match in a row.
"We have been working on some things this week, trying to be more creative and move people around a little more," Johnson-Lynch said. "We did not see a lot of it tonight but we saw flashes of it tonight. We saw people come off the bench and they did a great job attacking."
Iowa State got out to an early 4-0 lead in game one and never looked back, hitting .310 on the way to a 25-15 victory that took only 20 minutes. Tenisha Matlock and Hannah Willms each collected three kill for the Cyclones, with Matlock finishing the game a perfect 3-for-3 with no errors.
The teams stayed close to start the second set but Hockaday threw in three-straight aces as the Cyclones went on a 5-0 run to take the 16-10 lead. Hannah Johnson came off the bench at the end of set two, scoring three timely kills, including the game-decider.
The Cyclones play the only Friday match of the season this week, an 8 p.m. CDT start at No. 9 Texas. The match can be seen on the Longhorn Network.
