AMES, Iowa - The No. 16 Iowa State volleyball team knocked off the final undefeated Big 12 team in conference play with its 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 25-19) win over No. 22 Oklahoma Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum. The win improves Iowa State to 14-3 overall and to the top of the Big 12 standings with its 5-1 conference record. Oklahoma drops to 17-4 overall and 4-1 in Big 12 play.
"It was definitely not our best match and it was not pretty," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "We were able to dig some balls and match a great defensive team in digs. We did a good job knowing what they were going to do; we held them to a good percentage based off of what they were hitting on the year. We executed some things well but I thought we got a little spooked and jittery at times. It is a good win against a great team."
After dropping the third set 22-25, Iowa State bounced back strong in the fourth set, hitting .300 and restricting the Sooners to a .122 hitting clip. Jamie Straube led the Cyclones in the fourth with five kills while Carly Jenson added four kills.
"Although Carly did not hit for a very high percentage, she had some key kills late for us," Johnson-Lynch noted. "Our middles are really doing a great job for us and producing a lot, it was nice to see them step up. It was great to see (Hannah) Willms stay aggressive."
Willms posted a career-high 13 kills at a .357 hitting percentage and also posted a career-high with three block assists.
"The great thing about Hannah is that if she has a bad game, she blows it off and moves on to the next game," Johnson-Lynch said. "She is very comfortable out there, she has a lot of confidence but she just needs to get more experience. I loved her response tonight, she had been struggling and it is hard to come back from that."
Jenson posted her second-straight double-double with 14 kills, 14 digs and three block assists on the evening. Straube also posted 14 kills and three block assists in the Cyclone effort. Tenisha Matlock had one of her best matches as a Cyclone, posting a career-best 13 kills and two solo blocks to go with four block assists. Kristen Hahn posted 25 digs for Iowa State.
The Cyclones came out strong in set one, allowing Oklahoma to tie the score twice but never take the lead. Iowa State hit .261 and posted three blocks in defeating the Sooners 25-17 to take the first set. Straube had five kills in the game to lead all scorers, hitting .625 with no attack errors.
Game two was a tug of war but Straube and Jenson each had four kills to help pull out the win and take the 2-0 match lead into the locker room. After two sets, Oklahoma standout Suzy Boulavsky and Jenson each had a match-high nine kills.
It was the Sooners who returned to the court on fire after halftime. Sallie McLaurin smashed six kills home in the game as Oklahoma took set three to force a fourth. It was the first set of over .200 hitting for the visitors from Norman, Okla. who ended the set with a .222 clip.
Oklahoma was led by Tara Dunn's 15 kills and 15 digs on the evening. Boulavsky posted 14 kills and McLaurin also reached double-figures with 10 kills. Libero Maria Fernanda led the Sooners with 18 digs while Brianne Barker added 15.
The Cyclones have a bye on Wednesday before being back at Hilton next Saturday for the annual Dig Pink match against Baylor at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
