AMES, Iowa - For the fourth-consecutive year, an Iowa State player has earned the Big 12 Libero of the Year title as Cyclone sophomore Kristen Hahn garnered the top honor after leading the league all season in digs. Carly Jenson, Alison Landwehr and Jamie Straube were selected to the First Team All-Big 12 Team. It is the first honor for Hahn, Jenson and Landwehr and the second for Straube, who was named to the first team in 2010.
Hahn, who earned four defensive player-of-the-week awards during the season, was the Big 12 leader in digs at 5.54 digs per set overall and 5.46 digs per set in Big 12 play this season. Hahn was the only player in the league to post a 35-dig match in 2011, during Iowa State's win at North Dakota State on Sept. 10. The sophomore posted 24 double-digit dig matches, including 13 matches in which she collected over 20 digs, a feat that ties her for the school-record for most 20-dig matches in a season with Ashley Mass.
A unanimous first team selection by the Big 12 coaches, Jenson was the anchor of the Iowa State offensive attack in 2011. The senior led Iowa State, and finished third in the conference, with 4.04 kills per set in Big 12 play. The only Cyclone to play a full rotation, Jenson was a key contributor on defense, posting 3.28 digs per set during the campaign. With her dominating play on both sides of the ball, Jenson finished with 15 double-doubles on the year, including one in each of Iowa State's final four matches of the season.
Landwehr was a key cog to the Iowa State offense in 2011, leading the Big 12 with 11.37 assists per set on the season and also leading in conference matches with 11.77 assists per set. Her 64 assists at Oklahoma on Nov. 2 was the second-most by a player in the Big 12 in 2011 and the most by a Cyclone in a four-set match during the rally scoring era. The junior also bolstered the Iowa State defense, collecting 2.52 digs per set.
Leading the Cyclones in hitting for the second-straight season, Straube recorded a .323 hitting percentage on the year and a .344 percentage, ranked fifth, in Big 12 matches. The junior's serving was impressive all season, leading the Big 12 in conference play with 0.39 aces per set and Straube was the only Big 12 player with four aces in two conference matches. A force at the net, Straube led the Cyclones in solo blocks (10) and was second in block assists (77).
Big 12 Champion Texas also put three players on the team and garnered nods for coach of the year, player of the year (Bailey Webster) and freshman of the year (Haley Eckerman). Oklahoma's took defensive and newcomer player of the year awards as Sallie McLaurin and Carlee Rothelisberger took home the respective awards.
Next up for the fourth-seeded Cyclones is the first round of the NCAA tournament where Iowa State will face Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 7:30 p.m. CDT on Friday Dec. 2 at Hilton Coliseum.
