AMES, Iowa - Iowa State's Carly Jenson followed up her 25-kill performance at Oklahoma on Wednesday with 14 kills to lead No. 13 Iowa State past Texas Tech 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-17) Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. The win improves Iowa State to 19-4 overall, 10-2 in the Big 12. The Red Raiders drop to 15-11, 1-10 in conference play.
"I thought we were okay tonight, definitely not our best match," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "We were a little out of sync with our passing and defensively we were not as sharp as we hoped. We served very well and that was probably the best thing we did tonight."
In the third set the Cyclones were slowed down offensively, only hitting .212 but Iowa State found other ways to score, posting three service aces and a pair of blocks in the 25-17 third set victory. Victoria Hurtt led the Cyclones in the third with three kills on five attacks. Hurtt was tied for second on the match with seven kills.
"Hurtt has been playing really well in the last few weeks," Johnson-Lynch noted. "She has been playing really well in practice and matches and she deserved a shot to show what she can do. She is a great blocking presence and she blocks when she is in there, she played really nicely."
Joining Hurtt with seven kills were Jamie Straube and Tenisha Matlock. Kelsey Petersen added five kills. Petersen and Straube led the Cyclones in blocking with four block assists apiece and Straube adding a solo block. Caitlin Mahoney was a key cog in the Iowa State defense, leading the squad with a season-high 16 digs. Kristen Hahn added 13 and Rachel Hockaday posted nine digs.
Iowa State got out fast in the first set and Jenson took control, slamming nine kills in the set on .421 hitting. As a team, the Cyclones hit at a .429 clip, committing only two attack errors and collecting 17 team kills.
"They left Carly one-on-one and followed our middle and that allowed her to go off offensively," Johnson-Lynch stated. "They changed their strategy after that but she did a nice job in game one."
The teams tangled in set two, with Iowa State jumping out to a 2-0 lead on a kill and an ace by Straube but Tech came back and the teams were even at 13 midway through the game. However, the Cyclones rallied, finishing the set on a 12-6 run to win the set behind four kills and three total blocks from Straube.
The Red Raiders were led by Amanda Dowdy's 14 kills and 10 digs. Dowdy went off in the third set, posting nine kills on 29 attack attempts. Joining Dowdy with double-digit digs were Tory Vaughan at 13 and Brandy Husky with 11. Aubree Piper led TTU at the net with five block assists and setter Karlyn Meyers contributed four block assists and a solo block.
On Wednesday, the Cyclones are in Columbia, Mo. to play Missouri at 6:30 p.m. CST before their final bye of the season on Saturday.
