COLUMBIA, Mo - Cyclone Carly Jenson had 18 kills and Kelsey Petersen added a career-high 16 kills as No. 13 Iowa State (20-4, 11-2 Big 12) defeated Missouri (20-10, 6-7) in four sets on Wednesday, 23-25, 25-12, 28-26, 25-20.
Middle blocker Jamie Straube added 15 kills and freshman Victoria Hurtt had 14 kills in the contest.
The Cyclones lit up at the net, collecting 13 blocks to tie their season-high. Straube (six) and Jenson (five) tied career-highs for block assists while Tenisha Matlock added six block assists of her own, four in the final set, and Petersen contributed four.
Defensively, Iowa State earned the 76-61 dig edge behind libero Kristen Hahn's 28 digs. Rachel Hockaday added 12 digs and Jenson grabbed 11 for her 12th double-double of the season.
The teams went at it early in game one, tying 14 times but Missouri took advantage of Iowa State's errors in pulling out the 25-23 win. The Cyclones had more kills (19) than Mizzou (13) but racked up eight errors to MU's two and at the end Lisa Henning led all scorers with six kills while three Tigers tallied three block assists each.
Iowa State responded in game two, thumping Missouri 25-12 and leading 22-7 late in the game. The Cyclones were led by Straube's five kills and picked up four blocks, including two block assists each from Jenson and Straube.
It was more back-and-forth in set three. Missouri had three set points but Jenson and Straube combined with an error by Brittney Brimmage for the overtime 28-26 win, giving Iowa State the 2-1 match lead. Petersen had seven kills in the set to lead the Cyclones while Jenson and Straube each added four.
The fourth set continued the trend of close matches with 13 ties, making set two the anomaly. Iowa State pulled it out at the end, riding six kills from Jenson and four block assists from Matlock.
Henning led Missouri with 19 kills in the match while setter Molly Kreklow added 40 assists and a team-high 18 digs.
Next Wednesday the Cyclones are at home against Kansas State in a 6:30 p.m. CDT meeting at Hilton Coliseum.
