MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - No. 4 seed Iowa State (25-5) stormed its way into the NCAA Elite Eight on Friday night with a barn-burning come-from-behind 3-1 victory (18-25, 25-23,. 25-15, 31-29) over No. 13 seed Minnesota (20-12) in front of 3,237 fans at Sports Pavilion. With the win, the Cyclones advance to the Elite Eight for the second time in four years.
Senior Carly Jenson led the Cyclones on offense with 19 kills and freshman Victoria Hurtt smashed 15 kills, including the match-winner. Setter Alison Landwehr added 43 assists to move up to seventh all-time in Iowa State history with 4,483 assists.
The Cyclones collected 16 blocks in the match, the most since 2009, behind senior right side hitter Kelsey Petersen's career-high nine block assists to hold the Gophers to .186 hitting. Middle blockers Tenisha Matlock and Jamie Straube grabbed eight and seven block assists, respectively, with Straube adding a solo block as well. Libero Kristen Hahn posted a team-high 19 digs.
Iowa State looked to have the match in hand early in the fourth set, taking a 6-1 lead but Minnesota would not go away, tying the match 9-9 on a kill by Ashley Wittman. The teams battled back and forth, going into extra points and tying at 29-29 before and attack error by Gopher Hailey Cowles was followed by Hurtt's 15th kill of the night sent the Iowa State players into a mob on the court and into Saturday night's Elite Eight round. Petersen, who had not served yet this season, served out the final set for Iowa State.
The teams knotted at 7-7 in the first set before Minnesota setter Mia Tabberson served seven-straight points for the Gophers to take the 14-7 lead. Straube and Hurtt ended the run with a block of Katherine Harms but Minnesota never let up, riding four kills each by Harms and Wittman to the 1-0 match lead. The Cyclones hit just .031 in the game, committing six errors and scoring seven kills.
After going 0-for-7 in set one, Hurtt erupted for five kills in set two as the Cyclones hung on to even the match at 1-1. Minnesota came out strong, opening a 3-0 lead before a block by Petersen and Hurtt started a 6-0 run by the Cyclones. Iowa State held a 19-15 lead late in the set but the Gophers came back strong, tying it up at 21 before three late kills from Jenson and one from Matlock secured the win. Iowa State minimized mistakes in set two, committing just two errors while Minnesota racked up eight in hitting just .211.
Minnesota's offense continued to erode in set three as the Gophers tallied only 10 kills, led by Harms who had four in the set. Iowa State was led by six kills from Jenson who hit .342 through three sets to lead the team. Jenson was instrumental in Iowa State's 6-0 run to take a 15-9 lead in the set, smashing three kills and picking up a block assist during the scoring spree that put Iowa State up for good.
On Saturday, the Cyclones will face No. 12 seed Florida State who upset No. 5 seed Purdue, 3-1, in Friday's early match. Saturday's Elite Eight match is slated for 8:30 p.m. CDT at Sports Pavilion and tickets are available at the Minnesota Athletics Ticket Office.
