AMES, Iowa? The No. 23 Iowa State gymnastics team delivered its highest score since a March 23, 2007 victory over Iowa Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones' score of 196.350 was enough to down No. 20 Iowa, as the Hawkeyes scored 195.850, and Iowa State's victory halted the Hawkeyes from clinching the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Trophy.
Fueling the Iowa State (7-2-1) victory was senior Jody McKellar's 9.950 on bars that tied for the highest score on the apparatus in Iowa State gymnastics history with three other Cyclones. The last Cyclone to tally a 9.95 on bars was All-American Erin Dethloff on March 12, 2004.
“(Jody) is definitely in a really good groove right now,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “She's really polished and fine-tuned some of the detail on her bars routine, and I know she can still get better.”
With the win, Iowa State earned its fourth win over a team ranked in the top-22 this season.
Ronayne was thrilled with the effort his team displayed before an energetic crowd in the intrastate rivalry.
“The energy that was generated in Hilton Coliseum tonight helped us because it was the Iowa meet and it is special to any Cyclone fan,” Ronayne said. “It fuels everybody down on the floor. I could tell the crowd was really into it after the second event and it helped us.”
McKellar's bars effort earned her the event title. Fellow Cyclones Michelle Shealy (beam ? 9.900) and Michelle Browning (floor ? 9.875) also won events. Shealy tied Iowa's Rebecca Simbhudas for the beam title. Simbhudas also won the all-around with a 39.475 and vault (9.900) titles.
In addition to McKellar's historic effort on bars, freshman Camille Santerre-Gervais posted a career-high 9.900 on the event. The Cyclones would go on to score a 49.350 on the apparatus, their highest score on bars this season and the eighth-highest team score on bars in program history.
Scoring or tying career highs for Iowa State in the win were: Alex Grant (bars ? 9.850), Browning (bars ? 9.850), McKellar (bars ? 9.950), Santerre-Gervais (bars ? 9.900), Shea Anderson (beam ? 9.750), Hailey Johnson (beam ? 9.850), Michelle Shealy (beam ? 9.900), Anderson ( floor - 9.850), Johnson (floor ? 9.825) and Elizabeth Stranahan (floor ? 9.825).
The Cyclones return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Minneapolis to face 15th-ranked Minnesota in the Sports Pavilion.
