AMES, Iowa – Cool temperatures and a strong breeze did not keep Iowa State and Oklahoma inside today. OU defeated the Cyclones at the Forker Tennis Courts, taking the match 6-1. Iowa State is 9-7 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 action.
Erin Karonis, senior and co-captain, posted the only win of the day for Iowa State, over Ana-Maria Constantinescu 6-2, 6-2. Constantinescu is ranked 79 nationally, and head coach Armando Espinosa remarked on the No. 1 seat holders' match, because the two have met multiple times over the years.
“It was a huge win for her,” Espinosa said about Karonis. “Every year she's been here she's played her (Constantinescu). She played really hard because she wanted this match. Erin played big – she played to win.”
Iowa State struggled in doubles, dropping all 3 sets to the Sooners. After singles play started up, the weather got cooler as Iowa State's singles crew went to work.
“It's the third or fourth match we've played outside and the conditions weren't great for tennis,” Espinosa said. “They played well and we didn't adapt as well. At the end of the day it's who adapts better.”
Iowa State will take on Missouri next, traveling to face the Tigers on March 25 at 6 p.m. (CDT)
