Missouri Too Much for Cyclones

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Iowa State could not keep the No. 75 Missouri Tigers (9-5, 1-3 Big 12) at bay Friday night, falling by a score of 5-2. The Cyclones are now 9-8, 0-3 in Big 12 play.

Iowa State took its second conference doubles point of the season, winning two of the three matches. The Cyclone duo of Simona Cacciuttolo and Erin Karonis won at the No. 2 spot, defeating Tiger pair Marlen Hacke and Jamie Mera 8-3. No. 3 doubles was also secured by Iowa State, with Jenna Langhorst and Liza Wischer prevailing 8-2 over Rachel Stuhlmann and Madhi Besovic.

“We're giving ourselves a chance every time we go out there,” head coach Armando Espinosa said about doubles play. “Whether it's at number one, number two, or today at number three, we're competing well.”

Coming off of her big victory over Oklahoma last weekend, Erin Karonis chalked up another conference singles win. The senior shined at the No. 1 spot, overwhelming Kaitlyn Ritchie 6-4, 6-4.

“It's hard to beat her when she's not giving an inch out there,” Espinosa said of the co-captain. “She is giving herself opportunities and capitalizes on them. It's no surprise that she's winning at number one.”

Maria Fernanda Macedo, at No. 2, lost a tough fight against Mallory Weber in a tiebreaker set, 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (7-3). Cyclone co-captain Liza Wischer fought through three sets against Rachel Stuhlmann, but dropped the No. 6 spot 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. Marie-Christine Chartier started out ahead at No. 5, but could not hold onto the match against Jamie Mera and lost 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.

“We're going to work to translate what we're doing in doubles over to singles,” Espinosa said.

The Cyclones will travel to Colorado next with a match starting at noon (CDT) in Boulder.
