BOULDER, Colo. - It has become a common theme under third-year head coach Armando Espinosa for the Iowa State tennis team to see long streaks fall. Sunday afternoon in Boulder was no different as the Espinosa led Cyclones defeated Colorado, 5-2, to win a Big 12 road match for the first time since 1997. The Cyclones improve to 10-8 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play. It is Iowa State's second-straight win over Colorado.
The Cyclones started out strong again, winning the doubles point for the third time in four league matches. The duo of Maria Fernanda Macedo and Tessa Lang defeated Colorado's pair of Ania Anuszkiewicz and Kristina Schleich, 8-2. Erin Karonis and Simona Cacciuttolo secured the team point with an 8-5 win over Michala Hedelund and Abbie Probert.
"We were able to win the doubles, but we still have work to do," Espinosa said. "Like I said previously, we only need to win two, but it would be nice to make a statement and win all three."
The Cyclones battled difficult conditions to take four of the six singles points.
"It was difficult to adjust to the conditions because it was windy and cold. But we adapted a lot. It started feeling like it was going to go our way when Simona (Cacciuttolo) and Liza (Wischer) both got the first set because both of them were down. I think that helped the momentum to switch a little bit."
Cacciuttolo ended up earning a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory over the Buffaloes' Winde Janssens at No. 4 singles, while Wischer beat Anuszkiewicz, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Karonis won her third-straight match at No. 1 singles, defeating Kristina Schleich, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7), to improve to 3-1 in conference play. At No. 2 singles it was Macedo defeating Colorado's Probert in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-0, to win her second Big 12 match this spring.
The match was Iowa State's fourth Big 12 win under Espinosa. Prior to Espinosa taking over the team, the Cyclones had not won a Big 12 match since 2002.
The Cyclones return to action next Friday when they host Kansas at 2:30 p.m.
