AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones fell to the Kansas Jayhawks in a competitive home meet today. The teams met at the Forker Tennis Courts, and KU prevailed by a close score of 4-3. The loss brings Iowa State to 10-9 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12.
Maria Fernanda Macedo played her singles stint smart, quickly ousting KU's Monica Pezzotti 6-0, 6-0. Macedo's was the first Iowa State singles win of the day.
“I was really happy with Maria,”
Armando Espinosa, Iowa State's head coach said. “She took care of business in order to get us in there.”
Erin Karonis turned her no. 1 spot around after falling 7-5 in the first set to KU's 63rd-ranked Ekaterina Morozova. The senior turned it on in set two, cruising through to a 6-1 win. Karonis sealed the deal with a score of 6-2 in the tiebreaker set.
Though
Tessa Lang lost her first set at no. 3 singles 6-3, the junior quickly came back and defeated Sara Lazzrevic 6-2 in the second. Lang claimed the match with a score of 6-0 in the third set.
“It was a close one,” Espinosa said. “We just need to make sure that we don't wait and take it to the last minute.”
Iowa State came close in doubles, but could not keep the point from Kansas despite
Jenna Langhorst and
Liza Wischer's 8-5 victory at no. 3.
The Cyclones have Kansas State up next, hosting the Wildcats Sunday at noon.
