AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State soccer team held its annual banquet Saturday to honor the achievements of the 2010 season. Freshman Emily Goldstein was named the Cyclones' Offensive MVP and junior Mary Kate McLaughlin was the Defensive MVP.
Goldstein shared the Newcomer-of-the-Year honor with Caitlin Graboski. The Most Improved Player went to freshman Jennifer Dominguez.
The Cyclone Excellence Award that is given to an individual or group of individuals in recognition of their outstanding commitment to serving the community and Iowa State athletics through community service was awarded to senior Ashley Costanzo, junior Amanda Mayberry and sophomore Amanda Woelfel.
Iowa State's Iron Woman Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated an unyielding commitment to excellence through hard work and dedication. The award went to senior Jordan Bishop.
“Jordan Bishop is a playmaker and a threat to every team,” Iowa Stat head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “She stepped up this season and made a very positive impact.”
Sophomore Megan Long won the Coaches' Award that is given to an individual or group of individuals that exhibit a selfless attitude, incredible work rate, consistency and willingness to go above and beyond for the best interest of the team.
“Megan is the kind of young woman young girls look up to as a role model,” Dillinger said “She holds herself to a higher standard than anyone else sets for her on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Her future impact on society and others will be tremendous.”
Bishop and Costanzo earned the Cyclone Pride Award as well.
“Ashley Costanzo has always had a very upbeat attitude in everything we do on and off the field,” Dillinger said. “We could always count on her work rate to lead the group. Her ability to fly from one side of the goal to the opposite corner, snag the ball out of midair and hold it as she hit the ground was amazing.”
“Jordan Bishop's dedication and commitment to the game is second to none and will serve her well as she pursues playing at the next level,” Dillinger said. “Her steady, consistent play, vision, ability to distribute and attack out of the back made a tremendous impact on our team.”
Rounding out the awards at the event was the Cyclones' student-athletic trainer, Heather Gericke who earned the Cyclone Dedication Award.
The Cyclone Dedication Award is given to an individual or a group of individuals that have contributed to the Cyclone soccer program selflessly at a standard that raises the bar for those around them, given unsparingly of their time, commitment and energy to help advance the program.
