DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team (8-4) won its sixth-straight match Friday afternoon, sweeping the Drake Bulldogs (5-4) 7-0 in dual action. This marks the second sweep of the season for the Cyclones, fresh off of their 7-0 win over UMKC this morning.
“It was great,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We played a lot better in the evening than we did this morning.”
All three doubles matches went to Iowa State, securing the doubles point for the Cyclones at the start of the evening. Espinosa noted that opposing team's crowd involvement helped drive the team to achieve winning performances.
“We had a lot more focus and a little bit more energy,” Espinosa said. “There were a lot of people watching, and some people were getting pretty rowdy. That was important to keep us focused.”
The singles lineup at Drake was slightly different than against UMKC earlier in the day, but that didn't change Iowa State's success rate. The No. 2 singles spot went to Maria Fernanda Macedo, and the junior secured the dual by winning in a tiebreaker set 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 against Klavdija Rebol. Macedo's teammate Liza Wischer stepped into the No. 6 spot, taking the match 6-1, 6-2 over Amanda Aragon.
“[Drake] fought hard. They didn't give up easy, but we played better mentally.” Espinosa said. “We improved today.”
Iowa State looks to continue its winning streak tomorrow afternoon when the Cyclones return to Ames Racquet and Fitness to take on the Air Force Falcons.
