AMES, Iowa – Despite multiple comebacks and close set scores, Iowa State was unable to hold off Texas A&M as the No. 35 Aggies claimed this afternoon's match, 4-3. Iowa State's record moves to 1-8 Big 12, 10-13 overall.
"A win's a win, don't get me wrong," Iowa State head coach
Armando Espinosa said. "But despite the loss, we saw a good effort from our ladies today."
The day started off with A&M claiming the double's point, despite
Tessa Lang and Maria Macedo's No. 1 spot victory early on, beating Christi Liles and Christi Potgieter 8-4. Cyclones
Erin Karonis and
Simona Cacciuttolo dropped an 8-2 decision in the No. 2 spot, so it came down to
Liza Wischer and
Jenna Langhorst in the third slot. The Iowa State duo dropped a back-and-forth set 8-5, which solidified A&M's doubles point gain.
Lang enjoyed her second conference win of the season, overcoming Christi Liles of A&M 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles spot. In another three-set match,
Marie-Christine Chartier was responsible for the second Iowa State singles point of the day. In a tiebreaking 10-5 decision over Janelle Cuthberson, Chartier won at the No. 5 slot.
Liza Wischer rounded out Iowa State's three singles wins; defeating Aggie Stephanie Davidson 6-1, 6-3.
"Some of our girls found ways to win today," Espinosa said. "I think that was definitely the highlight of the match."
The Cyclones' final home meet of the season will begin against the Texas Longhorns tomorrow afternoon. Weather permitting, duals will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Forker Tennis Courts, but in case of rain, the sets will be played indoors at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center starting at 4:30 p.m. Iowa State will honor its three senior student-athletes preceding duals.
