AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Senior Day brought No. 25 Texas (14-6, 9-2 Big 12) to the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center, and the Longhorns won this afternoon's match 5-2. After today's loss, Iowa State's record moves to 10-14, 1-9 Big 12.
“It was a good match,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “I'm happy that we competed well, but it's just another one of those times where we need to seize every opportunity.”
Maria Macedo enjoyed a big singles win over UT's Maggie Mello, closing the three-set duel in a 10-2 tiebreaker. Macedo has won five of her Big 12 matches in the No. 2 slot this season. Liza Wischer, one of the seniors honored in today's senior day ceremony, secured her second win of the weekend with a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 victory at No. 6 over Elizabeth Begley.
Iowa State will be hard at work in the coming week to prepare for its next opponent, Nebraska. Saturday's match against the Cornhuskers will mark the end of regular-season competition before the Big 12 tournament.
“We want to get mentally prepared for Nebraska and the Big 12,” Espinosa said. “We're going to get back into the groove of things and keep working on it to get a little more competitive out there.”
