GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Iowa State soccer team extended its record streak of not allowing a goal to start the 2011 campaign Friday evening against Green Bay, but the Cyclones were unable to find the back of the net as well. The two teams settled for a 0-0 double-overtime draw, pushing Iowa State to 2-0-1 on the season.
By holding its first three opponents scoreless this season, the Cyclones set a new program record for most consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to start a campaign at 290. The previous high was 220:34, set in 2000.
"Our defense played solid and was very sound all night," Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. "Our defense has really been a whole team effort this season, and our backline has played really well. Their conditioning is good, and they have really handled themselves in one-on-one situations."
Cyclone sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Jobe recorded three saves en route to seeing her season record change to 2-0-1. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native played the full 110 minutes for Iowa State and has been the Iowa State goalkeeper for the entire 290-minute shutout streak. Dating back to last season, Jobe has not allowed a goal in 460:31 consecutive minutes of action.
"Maddie is doing a great job of giving direction to our backline," Dillinger said. "She also has also come up big when we have needed her to make saves."
Iowa State held a commanding 24-9 edge on shots in the match. The Cyclones also had 13 shots on goal, to Green Bay's three. Green Bay (1-1-1) and Iowa State tied on corner kicks at four apiece.
"The first half we didn't really play well and we got outplayed," Dillinger said. "We came out the second half and dominated and carried it into overtime. We had good chances and created good opportunities, but just did not finish. We created a great chance right before the final whistle, but just could not capitalize.
"We learned some valuable lessons tonight. We cannot come out slow and allow teams to hang around. Green Bay had some chances at the end of the game to sneak in a goal to get the win. We have to do a better job of coming out strong and getting an early goal."
Sophomore Jennifer Dominguez led the Iowa State attack with five shots with a pair being on target. Brittany Morgan and Hayley Womack each chipped in with three shots as well.
Iowa State will next face No. 23 Washington on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Cyclones will face the Huskies on the University of Wisconsin campus.
