AMES, Iowa - The No. 16 Iowa State volleyball team hit a season-high .402 as the Cyclones swept Missouri 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-21) Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The win improves Iowa State to 10-2 and 1-0 in Big 12 play. The win also tied head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch with Vicki Mealer for most volleyball coaching wins in school history with 135.
"I think there aren't many nights when everybody hits for a high percentage," Johnson-Lynch noted. "There are usually a couple of good ones and a couple who are off. We have been working on certain things with our middles, like hitting high. It was nice to see us hitting well and that was a reflection of Alison (Landwehr) making good decisions."
Wednesday night marked the first time Iowa State hit over .400 in a match since its .441 performance against Texas Tech last season.
The Cyclones were led by a Carly Jenson double-double consisting of 13 kills and 11 digs and Hannah Willms posting 11 kills at a career-best .308 hitting percentage.
"Hannah demonstrated that she really wants her spot," Johnson-Lynch said. "Competition makes our team better. I like the way Willms played tonight, she was competitive and composed. She blocked well, which was nice to see and she proved that she can play at a really high level against good teams."
The Cyclones flew through the first set, hitting .500 and restricting the Tigers (13-4, 0-1 Big 12) to .154 to win the set in under 20 minutes. Iowa State posted a .400 hitting percentage and once against restricted the Tigers under .200, at .184, to lock up the second set 25-18. In the third Missouri hung tough but was never able to overcome an early 5-1 run by the Cyclones and Iowa State secured the victory with a 25-21 third set victory.
Missouri was led by Lisa Henning's 13 kills and Emily Wilson posted eight. Libero Priscilla Armendariz led the Tigers with 11 digs on the night.
Iowa State plays its first Big 12 road match Saturday when the Cyclones travel to Texas Tech for a 1 p.m. CDT match.
