AMES, Iowa - Iowa State junior Jennifer Dominguez had her second-straight two-goal match Sunday against Big 12-leading West Virginia, but the Mountaineers were able to escape with a 3-2 win at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
With her four-goal weekend, Dominguez has rocketed up the Iowa State record book. The Lubbock, Texas, native has 11 goals this season, a mark that puts her in third place all-time in Cyclone history.
Dominguez wasted little time to give Iowa State (9-7 overall, 1-4 Big 12) a 1-0 lead. Dominguez expertly redirected a cross from junior Meredith Skitt into the back of the net just 1:13 into the match.
The Cyclones looked poised to take a two-goal lead minutes later when junior Emily Goldstein got behind the West Virginia (9-3-3 overall, 5-0 Big 12) defense. Goldstein fired a shot that just rolled just outside the goalpost.
Iowa State's lead was erased with a goal by West Virginia's Kelsie Maloney at the 27:26 mark. Kate Schwindel provided one of her three assist on the day for the goal.
The two teams remained level at one at halftime in a fairly even first half. West Virginia held narrow edges in both shots (8-6) and corner kicks (2-1) at the break.
The Mountaineers put the Cyclones under pressure in the second half and were rewarded with a goal 11:29 after halftime. Frances Silva scored from close range after Schwindel crossed the ball from the left side. West Virginia did not relent and doubled its lead at the 69:32 mark when Silva and Schwindel connected again to make the score 3-1.
Dominguez provided the Cyclones with hopes of a late rally when she scored after a cross from junior Jessie Stewart with 5:45 remaining in the match. Iowa State tried vigorously to try to find the equalizer but time eventually ran out.
Junior Maddie Jobe returned from injury and played the full match in goal. Jobe made a bevy of high-quality saves and totaled nine stops on the game.
West Virginia outshot Iowa State, 21-13 and also had six corner kicks to Iowa State's three.
The Cyclones have a rare week off before facing Drake on Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. The match will be played at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
