No. 19 Cyclones Sweep Baylor

WACO, Texas – The 19th-ranked Cyclones (18-7, 11-3 Big 12) continued its winning streak on Saturday, sweeping Baylor (19-11, 6-9 Big 12) for their eighth-straight win (25-20, 25-18, 26-24). Iowa State has earned sweeps in five of its last six contests.

The Cyclone defense owned the match, in which neither offense got going until set three. Libero Kristen Hahn recorded 28 digs in the match, including 14 digs in set three alone, to close the day with an average just shy of nine digs per set. Hahn has 14 matches of 25 digs this season and 29 such performances in her career. Rachel Hockaday was the other Cyclone with double-digit digs, counting 13 on the day.

Andie Malloy was tops on offense for Iowa State, with 13 kills in the match, the only player on the court to reach 10 kills. Mackenzie Bigbee and Jamie Straube added nine and eight kills, respectively and setter Alison Landwehr had 37 assists.

Trailing 7-14 in the first set, the Cyclones mounted a comeback on the back of Hahn, who served the Cyclones to a 6-0 run to pull within two, down 14-16. Getting three kills each from Bigbee, Malloy and Straube in the game, Iowa State closed out an 18-6 run for the set win and 1-0 match lead. Both offenses struggled, Iowa State hitting .179, the Bears coming in at .088.

Iowa State took the 2-0 lead after another poor offensive game from both teams. Malloy had four kills for the Cyclones who tallied a .032 clip in the set. Baylor hit -.027, getting two kills from Thea Munch-Soegaard. The home team had four service errors in the set, further frustrating their attempts to take the set.

Malloy added to her day in the final set, picking up six kills and six digs, including giving Iowa State the final match point it needed before Straube scored the winning kill. The Cyclone offense showed life in the third game, as the Cyclones hit .304 and the Bears came up short again, with a .271 average.

Torri Campbell led the Bears in the match with eight kills.

The Cyclones close out their road schedule on Wednesday night at West Virginia. The midweek match is slated for 5:30 p.m. CST.
