AMES, Iowa – The No. 21 Iowa State (15-7, 8-3 Big 12) swept Big 12 Conference foe Texas Tech (13-14, 2-9 Big 12), 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-16) Saturday night in front of a crowd of 3,211 in Hilton Coliseum.
"First of all, I thought that was a great crowd,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. “Warming up, when I started to see all those people file in, I think we have some of the best fans in the country, and it was fun to play in front of them tonight, especially with a tremendous crowd. I thought it was a good effort and performance overall.”
Iowa State had a balanced attack led by Victoria Hurtt's 10-kill night and Alison Landwehr's 40-assist effort. The Cyclones had four players (Hurtt, Jamie Straube, Mackenzie Bigbee and Andie Malloy) had at least eight kills.
”Victoria Hurtt obviously had a great match,” Johnson-Lynch said. She's playing with a lot of confidence. We wanted to play (Andie) Malloy tonight because she's been playing well, and we wanted to rest Rachel Hockaday as much as we could."
Straube and Bigbee each posted a solo block and three block assists in leading the Cyclones to eight total blocks on the night, out-blocking the Red Raiders 8-7.Tenisha Matlock also added three block assists in the contest. Brianna Grant of Texas Tech had four block assists for the visitors.
“What stands out to me most is blocks,” Johnson-Lynch said. “We are determined to be a better blocking team, and we've been working on it. I feel like we're making strides and we made strides tonight. I thought our block looked as good as it has all season, and that's not just stuffs, it's not getting used, it's getting good touches, and being in the right spot.”
Texas Tech could do little to hold-off an Iowa State team that has won its last six matches. The Red Raiders' Miara Cave had a team-high six kills. Emily Ruetter had a team-best 20 assists for the Red Raiders.
The Cyclones return to action in a week when they travel to Norman to face Oklahoma. The time for the match has yet to be announced.
