AMES, Iowa -Iowa State (6-2 overall, 0-0 Big 12 Conference) drilled 13 3-pointers en route to an 83-72 victory over Florida Gulf Coast (6-4 overall, 0-0 Atlantic Sun Conference) Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Korie Lucious buried a career-high five treys and dished out nine assists in the win. He got help from Melvin Ejim, who tallied his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
ISU's 13 treys was a season high and it marks the fourth time this season where the Cyclones made 10 or more 3-pointers in a game.
The game went back and forth in the first part of the opening period until FGCU went on a 7-0 run to forge ahead, 29-22 with 6:46 left in the first period. Bernard Thompson had five points during the run, including a 3-pointer.
The Cyclones shook off their sluggish start and responded with a 15-1 run to move ahead 37-30 with 2:25 left in the opening period. Tyrus McGee, Lucious and Will Clyburn all buried 3-pointers in the run.
ISU went into the break with a 41-37 lead.
The Cyclones opened the second half on fire, making 7-of-10 to begin the second period while taking a 62-46 lead with 12:35 left in the game. ISU used an 11-0 run to mount its 16-point lead, as Ejim and McGee each had four points in the run.
The Eagles wouldn't go away. Thompson and Chase Fieler made back-to-back 3-pointers for FGCU to trim the Cyclone lead to 66-58 with 10:11 remaining in the contest.
Georges Niang ended the run with a drive to the hoop followed by a Lucious trey and a McGee bomb to push the Cyclone lead to 74-58 with 6:36 left in the game.
The Cyclone lead reached 19 points (81-62) with just under four minutes left in the game.
McGee came off the bench to record 16 points in the win, making 3-of-4 shots from beyond the arc. McGee has hit three or more 3-pointers in four of eight games this season. Chris Babb also hit three treys in the win en route to 11 points.
The Cyclones kept their rebounding streak alive, outboarding their eighth-straight opponent, 37-31.
Iowa State travels to Iowa on Friday to face the Hawkeyes in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT.
