COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Iowa State soccer team got its spring season off to a stellar start with a 4-1 victory over Missouri Sunday at Walton Stadium. Megan Long delivered two goals, while Brittany Morgan and Susie Potterveld also found the back of the net for the Cyclones.
Long started the scoring off an assist from Hayley Womack, and the Cyclones took the 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
"Today's performance is a credit to the hard work our players have been doing with lifting, speed training and conditioning over the last six weeks," Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. "Coach Moser and Coach Tuetken have designed a high-intensity program to maximize the athletic potential of our players and have raised the bar of expectation. Every player on the team has risen to the challenge, and it showed today in our play. Each member of the team contributed to the win today, and it was great to see. We moved the ball very well, keeping possession and attacking the areas of the field we were looking to attack. We had a number of players involved in building the attack, and a number of different players were involved in creating our goals today. The depth on this team is going to be a key to our success next fall."
Long doubled Iowa State's lead 15 minutes into the second off an assist from Jessie Stewart. The Tigers responded by scoring their lone goal to make it 2-1.
The Cyclones ended any doubts of the outcome when Morgan made the score 3-1 and Potterveld put the contest out of reach with the match's final tally.
Maddie Jobe, Andrea Swanson and Jenna O'Dell split time at goalkeeper for the Cyclones. Jobe played the first half, and held the Tigers scoreless. Swanson took over goalkeeping duties in the second half before making way to O'Dell.
"All three of our keepers
played well today," Dillinger said. "Maddie's command of her 18-yard box
combined with her communication and direction with the backs has brought new
confidence in our defensive unit. Andrea and Jenna have also both raised
their level of play which will keep the competition for the starting spot in
goal very tight."
Iowa State's next match is Feb. 26 against Creighton at noon. The match will be played at the Bergstrom
Indoor Training Facility in Ames.
