AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team unveiled its 2011 team awards at its annual banquet Sunday. Sophomore Jennifer Dominguez and senior Mary Kate McLaughlin earned the top honors at the event by taking home the Offensive Most Valuable Player Award and Defensive Most Valuable Player Award, respectively.
Des Moines, Iowa, native McLaughlin earned the defensive MVP for the third consecutive season. A 2011 team co-captain McLaughlin led the Cyclones to a team-record-tying nine shutouts. McLaughlin racked up a team-high 1,735 minutes of action while starting all 19 games for the Cyclones in 2011. She tallied a pair of goals (both game winners) and also notched an assist during her senior campaign. McLaughlin was also named the team's Ironwoman, an honor bestowed upon an individual that has demonstrated an unyielding commitment to excellence through hard work and dedication.
Lubbock, Texas, native Dominguez led Iowa State in goals (five), points (11), game-winning goals (three), shots (48) and shots on goal (23) in 2011. Dominguez started all 18 matches she appeared in while registering a total of 1,026 minutes of action. Dominguez's three game-winning goals tied her for the third-most in a season in Iowa State history.
Lindsay Frank was named the Cyclones' Newcomer of the Year after the Carrollton, Texas, native proved to be a force in the Iowa State defense. Frank made her presence particularly felt during league action, as she started all eight of the Cyclones' matches and played the full game in the final six Big 12 tilts. Overall, Frank registered 1,293 minutes on 18 appearances and cracked the Iowa State starting lineup on 13 occasions.
Sophomore Margaret Powers earned the team's Most Improved Player Award after a 2011 campaign where she made 17 appearances and three starts. The Omaha, Neb., native registered 294 minutes and tallied an assist for the Cyclones in their win over No. 23 Washington.
The Cyclone Excellence Award was given to senior Amanda Mayberry for the second-straight season. The honor goes to an individual or group of individuals in recognition of their outstanding commitment to serving the community and Cyclone athletics through community service.
Sophomores Jessica Stewart and Meredith Skitt earned the Coaches' Award. The honor is awarded to an individual or group of individuals that exhibits a selfless attitude, incredible work rate, consistency and willingness to go above and beyond for the best interest of the team. Both Stewart and Skitt were key components to the sturdy Cyclone backline of 2011.
Assistant coach Ben Madsen earned the Cyclone Dedication Award after serving on the Iowa State staff for four years. The honor is awarded to an individual or a group of individuals that have contributed to the Cyclone soccer program selflessly at a standard that raises the bar for those around them, given unsparingly of their time, commitment and energy to help advance the program.
