AMES, Iowa - The Cyclone softball team includes nine newcomers, seven freshmen and two sophomore transfers, this season. Each week, cyclones.com will feature one of the nine newcomers, allowing fans to get to know the players off the field.
Shortstop Lexi Slater has had an immediate impact on the 2012 Cyclones, using her quick reflexes to nab line drives and scoop up ground balls and throw out runners. Slater is fourth in the Big 12 this season with 84 assists.
At the plate, the Ramona, Calif. native is hitting .229 with five home runs including two long balls in Iowa State's 17-0 win over Brown during non-conference play. Against the Bears, Slater became one of six Cyclones in program history to drive in six runs in a game. Slater's clutch hitting has been an asset as the freshman is hitting .379 (11-for-29) with two outs and is second on the team with 14 two-out RBIs.
