LINCOLN, Neb. - Junior Meredith Skitt provided all the offense the Iowa State soccer team needed with an unassisted goal at the 84:07 mark in its 1-0 win over New Mexico Friday at the Nebraska Soccer Field. The Cyclones improved to 3-0 overall on the season with their win over the two-time defending Mountain-West-Conference-champion Lobos.
The Cyclones' 3-0 start marks the second time in program history Iowa State has won its first three contests. The 2002 Cyclones also started their season 3-0.
Skitt has proven to have a penchant for scoring important goals during her Iowa State career. Her lone previous goal was the game-winner in the Cyclones' victory over No. 23-ranked Washington on Aug. 28, 2011.
The Cyclones have posted shutouts in their first three matches and dating back to last season have not allowed a goal in four games. Junior goalkeeper Maddie Jobe played the full 90 minutes for Iowa State and made four saves. The reigning Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week earned her third win of the season and posted her second shutout. Jobe has not conceded a goal in over 245 minutes, a stretch that started in the 2011 season.
Jobe's counterpart, Kelli Cornell, tallied a pair of saves for the Lobos.
Junior Jessica Stewart led the Cyclones with a career-high three shots, with one being on goal.
In a match that proved to be statistically tight, New Mexico (0-2-1) led in shots 8-7 and corner kicks 2-1.
The Cyclones face a stern test in their next contest. Iowa State plays No. 16 Virginia Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at the Nebraska Soccer Field.
