AMES, Iowa - Goals by Jennifer Dominguez and Kaeli Flaska led the Iowa State soccer team past Milwaukee 2-1 Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex. The win is the Cyclones' fourth in their last five games and gives them momentum before Friday's Big 12 Conference opener against Texas.
Iowa State (7-3 overall) scored on its first shot of the game when Dominguez flew a shot off her left foot into the top corner of the goal from long distance. Dominguez has scored in two-straight matches and has a team-best in the category (six) and points (12). Dominguez's six goals is also the best season output the junior has had at Iowa State.
The Cyclones had to deal with some unexpected adversity when junior goalkeeper Maddie Jobe had to leave the match due to injury at the 76:03 mark. Jobe made an aggressive clearance on a Milwaukee free kick but collided with a Panther in the process. Sophomore Andrea Swanson relived Jobe and played the remainder of the match.
The game appeared to be headed to stressful ending for the Cyclones when they could not find an insurance goal. However, Flaska gave Iowa State its needed cushion when she scored at the 78:42 mark. Flaska took advantage of a flat Milwaukee (1-5-1) back line that allowed a header from Cyclone Alyssa Williamson to get through. Flaska ran onto Williamson's pass, dribbled around the Panthers' goalkeeper Jamie Forbes before slotting the ball into the back of the net.
Flaska's goal was her third of the season and gave her seven points on the young campaign.
The Cyclones nearly had the finishing touches on a 2-0 win when Milwaukee's Krissy Dorre got behind the Cyclone defense. Swanson came to intervene and thwarted the initial attack. However, Kelly Lewers sprang onto the ball and fired it into the open net with just three seconds left.
The Cyclones dominated statistically with an 18-9 edge on shots and lead in corner kicks 7-4. The Cyclones had eight shots on goal to the Panthers' five.
Jobe registered four saves at goalkeeper. Swanson was not forced to make a save in her 13:57 minutes of action.
Iowa State begins league action Friday when it plays host to Texas at 7 p.m. CT at the ISU Soccer Complex.
