BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Cyclones (13-15, 0-0 Big 12) split games with Dartmouth (9-7, 0-0 Ivy League) and Bethune-Cookman (4-24, 0-0 MEAC) and freshman Brittany Gomez broke the Iowa State single-season stolen base record on Friday at the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament. Dartmouth defeated Iowa State, 8-7, and the Cyclones downed B-CU, 7-0.
Gomez stole a base in each of the day's games, giving her 19 for the season, ahead of former Cyclones Lisa Frank (2000) and Kelsey Kidwell (2008) who collected 18 each in earlier seasons.
Senior Tori Torrescano took the loss in the circle against Dartmouth but connected for her 10th home run of the season, a three-run shot off the left field foul pole in the bottom of the seventh as Iowa State attempted a late rally against the Big Green. Iowa State posted five runs in the final inning to draw within one but Dartmouth worked out of the jam for the win.
Erica Miller drove in two of Iowa State's xx runs against the Wildcats, going 2-for-4 at the plate in the game. Against Dartmouth, Miller was 0-for-1 with three walks.
Dartmouth's first two batters singled and, after a double-play grounder from Hillary Hubert, the Big Green scored their first run on a single to the right side from Morgan McCalmon.
Katie McEachern hit a two-run home run in the third to extend the Big Green's lead to 3-0 and finish Torrescano's (6-7) day in the circle after two and one-thirds innings in which the senior gave up three runs on five hits, walked none and fanned one.
At the plate in the bottom of the third, Torrescano singled to left to drive in Maddie Reese and Sarah Hawryluk and cut the lead to 3-2.
Four hits and a passed ball put three more runs across for the Big Green in the fifth and the squad added one more run in both the sixth and seventh innings, leaving Iowa State down, 8-2, with three outs remaining.
Brittany Gomez led off the seventh with a single down the right field line and moved to second on her 17th stolen base of the season. Erica Miller walked to put two on with no outs for Torrescano who hit the foul pole in left field to bring Iowa State within three, down 8-5. Singles form Reese and pinch hitter Aly Cappaert pulled the Cyclones within one, trailing 8-7, but the team would get no closer, falling in the first game of the day.
Rumley (8-3) threw five and one third innings for Dartmouth, charged with two runs on six Iowa State hits, walked three and struck out five.
Miller got Iowa State an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first against B-CU with an RBI-single up the middle and neither team scored again until a Wildcats error scored Gomez from third in the top of the fifth and pinch runner Jennifer Drahozal stole home, extending the Cyclone lead.
Bethune-Cookman's best chance to score came on back-to-back walks to start the fifth but Fisher (2-4) worked out of the inning without allowing any damage. Fisher worked her third complete game of the season, giving up no runs on one hit, walking three and fanning five.
The Cyclones tacked on two more runs in the final frame, on an RBI-double down the right field line from Spendlove and a single from Reese for the 7-0 lead.
B-CU starter Samantha Gale (2-7) lasted four-plus innings, giving up eight hits and four runs, two earned, while walking two and striking out one.
Iowa State plays its final two games of the weekend on Saturday, facing Elon at 1:30 p.m. and host Florida Atlantic at 3:45 p.m.
