AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team heads to the state of South Dakota for a two-game road swing to open the regular season, with their first game against South Dakota State on Friday and their second against South Dakota on Sunday.
Last time out
The Cyclones were edged out in a close exhibition game against Western Illinois, 4-3. The game featured two second half goals by Junior Hayley Womack, who led the charge for the Cyclones. The Cyclones made a fierce comeback, scoring three consecutive goals, but simply ran out of time.
Scouting the Jackrabbits
The Cyclones take on South Dakota State Friday at 6 p.m., in Brookings, S.D. Last season, Iowa State came away victorious against the Jackrabbits with a 2-1 win on South Dakota State's home turf. The Jackrabbits came out hot offensively; scoring 10 goals with a 10-0 shutout win over Winnipeg in their exhibition game.
What to watch for
The key matchup looks to be between the swift-scoring Jackrabbit offense that notched 10 goals in an exhibition match against Winnipeg, and the Cyclones goalkeeper Maddie Jobe. Last season Jobe recorded 74 saves and three shutouts and will look to continue her impressive play. The offensive lineup includes a familiar face with Diana Potterveld, who led the Jackrabbits in goals last season and is the sister of Iowa State's own Susie Potterveld.
Scouting the Coyotes
The Cyclones take on South Dakota Sunday at 1 p.m., in Vermillion, S.D. Last season the Cyclones defeated the Coyotes 7-0 in a game in Ames, IA. The Coyotes won their exhibition game against Viterbo 3-0. The Coyotes play Loyola University on Friday before their game against the Cyclones.
What to watch for
Iowa State's All-Big 12 forward Jennifer Dominguez and company will look to score on a pair of South Dakota goalkeepers. The Coyotes return both Jen Shaefer and Mackenzie Viktor, who combined for 61 saves last season. Viktor played all 90 minutes for the Coyotes in their exhibition game against Viterbo, recording five saves. Dominguez led the Big 12 in goals per game last season and hopes to keep her hot streak going this year.
Results will be available on Cyclones.com after the conclusion of each game.
