VERMILLION, South Dakota – The Iowa State volleyball team gave head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch the 200th win over Iowa State career with a 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-17) sweep of South Dakota Tuesday night at the DakotaDome. The win improved Iowa State to 10-6 on the season, while South Dakota is now 12-8.
Turning Point of the Match
The first set was controlled by the home team most of the way, as the Coyotes used a strong serving game to build up a 15-10 advantage. Iowa State fought their way back from there as some persistent hitting saw ISU take six of the next seven points to tie it up at 16-16. The teams traded points with ISU eventually getting a lead and the first set point. USD was able to battle it off but a kill from Alexis Conaway and an attack error by Kendall Kritenbrink got the Cyclones the first set 26-24.
The second set went the opposite way, but saw the exact same result. Iowa State was the team that was able to pull out an early advantage with South Dakota having to find their way back into the set. The Coyotes earned the first chance at taking the set, but ISU caught a break with a Kritenbrink service error. ISU capitalized on back-to-back attack errors from South Dakota to again take the set 26-24.
Iowa State was in control of the third set from the onset and was able to build up a 19-10 lead. The Coyotes were able to reduce the margin a little, but the result was not in doubt as Mackenzie Bigbee finished off the match with a kill to take the set 25-17.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Caitlin Nolan. A dominant performance from the Iowa State libero, who recorded her fourth consecutive 20-dig match with 26 digs.
