KANSAS CITY, Mo. –Maryland (5-0) defeated No. 13 Iowa State (3-1), 72-63 Tuesday night to win the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Sprint Center.
The Cyclones never could get on track in the loss, shooting 29.7 percent from the field, including a 21.2 percent clip in the second half.
Bryce Dejean-Jones led the way for ISU with 17 points. Georges Niang added 10 points in the loss.
It marked the first time ISU failed to score 70 points in a game since falling to Oklahoma, 86-69 on March 2, 2013, a streak of 45 games.
How it happened…
Maryland burst out of the gates by making 9-of-14 shots to mount a 23-16 lead at the 11:30 mark of the first half. ISU was shooting well, but couldn't match the Terps' hot start to fall down early.
The Cyclones tried to whittle away at the Terp lead throughout the remainder of the first half. Matt Thomas drained a trey followed by a Naz Long lay-up to cut the gap to 23-21.
Daniel Edozie, who spelled a foul-plagued Georges Niang, kept the Cyclones in the game by scoring six points in the final six minutes of the half. The Terps went into the break with a 37-34 lead, as the Cyclones shot just 38.7 percent from the field. Dejean-Jones had 13 points and Edozie added eight points in the first half.
The second half couldn't have started any worse for ISU, as the Cyclones missed their first nine shots to fall down 43-34 with 14:37 left in the game. Niang finally got the lid off the bucket with a drive to the hoop.
Iowa State tried to chip away at the lead, but Maryland always had the answer. Jared Nickens scored eight-straight points for Maryland on three buckets after Iowa State scores to keep the Terp lead at 54-46 with under nine minutes remaining.
Nickens later gave Maryland a 64-51 lead on a floater with 3:45 left in the game.
