AMES, Iowa – Dustin Hogue scored Iowa State's (11-2, 1-0 Big 12) final seven points and came up with a huge block with 0:00.9 seconds left to help the No. 17 Cyclones hold off Oklahoma State (11-3, 1-1 Big 12), 63-61 Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Hogue was the man of the hour. With the Cyclones clinging to a 56-55 lead with under three minutes left, the senior hit a big trey and then two more baskets in the final two minutes to stop the charging Cowboys.
His block, however, was the biggest play. After Georges Niang missed a front end of a one-and-one, OSU had the ball for the final shot down 63-61 with :21 seconds left. Tavarius Shine briefly got open in the corner for a trey, but Hogue raced over and swatted the shot into the stands.
Hogue finished the game with 17 points, all in the second half, on 7-of-9 shooting and had eight rebounds. Matt Thomas came off the bench to score 10 points and Monte' Morris had eight points and six dimes.
Phil Forte led the Cowboys with 21 points.
The win was ISU's fourth-straight Big 12 home-opening victory and the fourth-straight win over the Cowboys. The Cyclones hadn't beaten OSU four-straight times since 1973-74.
How it happened…
The first half was a struggle offensively for both teams. With percentages lingering in the low 30 percent on both sides, the game see-sawed back in forth for the first 17 minutes with seven ties and seven lead changes.
ISU finally received some separation with a jolt from the bench by Thomas. Thomas drained ISU's first trey of the game (ISU missed its first eight shots from downtown) to give ISU the lead at 21-19 with 2:19 left in the first half.
After Monte' Morris scored on a fast-break lay-in, Thomas then drilled a step-back 3-pointer from the corner to cap off an 8-0 ISU run and put the Cyclones on top, 26-19. The Cyclones went into the break with a 26-21 lead.
After ISU jumped out to an 11-point lead early in the second half, the Cowboys bounced back. Le'Bryan Nash scored six points and Phil Forte hit a pair of treys in a 20-8 run to give the Cowboys the lead at 43-42 with 11:44 remaining.
A Naz Long 3-pointer and a Georges Niang conventional 3-point play helped ISU go back by seven points, but Jeff Newberry canned a trey and scored on a breakaway to cut the Cyclone lead to 54-52 with 7:38 remaining.
OSU never got closer than one point the rest of the way, as Hogue took over.
The #cyclONEgameball goes to…
Dustin Hogue. Hogue's second-half performance was incredible. He scored all of his 17 points in the second stanza, making all of his shots from the field after the break (7-7 FG). He also grabbed eight boards and tied his career high with three 3-pointers.
