AMES, Iowa – Iowa State had seven players in double figures and defeated Grand Valley State, 106-60, in its only exhibition game prior to opening the 2015-16 season Friday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 14,384.
The Cyclones had 28 assists on 37 field goals, connecting on 16-of-32 three-pointers in the game.
How it happened…
The Cyclones closed the opening stanza on an 11-0 run and raced out to a 52-21 halftime lead behind nine 3-pointers. Six players had six points or more in the first half, paced by Monté Morris' 11. Iowa State forced 10 turnovers and scored 13 points off the Laker miscues.
Iowa State continued to roll after the intermission, led by Nazareth Mitrou-Long. The senior sharpshooter returned after offseason hip surgery to finish with a team-high 20 points, including 14 in the first six minutes of the second half as ISU extended its lead to as much as 47 points.
ISU had a 45-31 edge on the glass.
Players of Note...
Pick a player for Iowa State. Seven players were in double figures for the Cyclones, led by Mitrou-Long's 20 points and Morris' 17.
Morris had the best overall game for the Cyclones, adding eight assists, four rebounds and three steals to his stat line. Jameel McKay and Abdel Nader finished with 13 points each and Georges Niang had 11 points, nine of which came early in the game.
Matt Thomas and Hallice Cooke came off the bench to score in double figures with 12 points each for the Cyclones.
McKay had a double-double in the win, grabbing 11 boards to go along with three blocks.
Grand Valley State was paced by Chaz Rollins' 13 points.
