AMES, Iowa – Head coach Tony Minatta announced the addition of three incoming transfers on Thursday, as Madison Wiegand-Brown and Brooke Tasker join the Cyclones from the University of Oregon and Brianna Curtis from Arkansas.
All three newcomers are Colorado natives, continuing the Colorado-Iowa State pipeline set up by head coach Tony Minatta. The 2016 team will feature eight student-athletes from the state of Colorado. They will be joining the program in the spring and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
"We are very excited about adding these three athletes to the Cyclone soccer program. They are all coming in this spring and have three years of eligibility, so that gives us time to work with them and integrate them into the team before we begin the Fall season,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “All three come from winning club programs that competed at the highest possible level in both the ECNL and the U.S.Youth National League. They are bringing that mentality as well as the experience they gained from competing with BCS conference programs. Each of them add a different element to our program that will really enhance what we are striving to accomplish as we continue to raise the standard of play."
Wiegand-Brown is a defender from Colorado Springs, Colo. She competed in two games for the Ducks as a freshman. During high school, she played club soccer for the Pride Soccer Club where she was a captain from 2009-14. Her team won the State Cup in 2012 and 2013 and was the 2013 US Club National Cup Champions.
"Madi is one of those blue-collar type players that really just works hard and competes,” said head coach Tony Minatta. “She has incredible speed and athleticism, which will really add to our back line and our overall team defending. She plays with an edge and has spent hours working on her technical skills and soccer IQ. She comes from a great club background with the Colorado Pride, where she played in the National League and competed for the National Championship. Her experience playing for a PAC 12 program will be immense as she gets into our training environment this spring. Having coached Madi with the Colorado Olympic Development program in Colorado, I know what type of person she is and know that she is of high character and has a winning mentality."
Tasker, an attacking midfielder, is a native of Aurora, Colo. Tasker saw action in seven games and totaling 133 minutes, where she fired four shots with one on goal. During her club soccer career, she played for the Real Colorado club team for one year and Colorado Storm for six seasons. Tasker was a two-time tournament MVP for the Colorado State Cup and led the tournament in scoring in 2010.
"Brooke is a player that I have been watching for quite some time now back in my Colorado Club days and through the recruiting process. She also has played at a very high level with her club soccer career, for some of the best coaches in the country at Real Colorado with Lorne Donaldson. She has had National Team camp experience, as well as the highest levels through the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development program. Brooke is an attacking minded player who really looks to not only score goals herself, but combine with the forwards to create opportunities for them. She has a nose for the goal and is the type of player that finds herself in position to score. Again, playing in the PAC 12 has given her great experience in a very demanding conference that will really benefit her and our team as we get to work this spring. She is another player of high character, and she is looking to be able to prove herself with a fresh start at Iowa State."
Curtis, an Evergreen, Colo., native, joins the Cyclones after playing her freshman season with the Razorbacks. The forward competed in four games and tallied 22 minutes of action. Curtis was named an All-State and first team All-Conference performer at Evergreen High School. Curtis had a stellar club soccer career while playing for the Colorado Rush ECNL club team. Her Colorado Rush team won the ECNL Western Conference every year she competed and even won the ECNL National Championship in 2012.
"Brianna is a supremely gifted athlete, who has displayed a relentless work ethic when she is on the field,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “She has also played at the highest competitive level with a Colorado Rush ECNL team that were the National Champions. She comes from a great club environment where they really teach the fundamentals of the game and demand excellence in every aspect. I believe she will have an immediate impact with our team in the attack. She has great speed, but is also able to handle the ball under pressure and is used to playing the style with which we are striving for. She brings a ton of positive energy and is a player that will go above and beyond what is asked of her in order for us to be successful. She is a high character young woman, and Brianna has gained some valuable experience in a very tough conference, so she knows the demands and is looking forward to the challenge."
All three incoming transfers will compete for the Cyclones in the 2016 season.
