Doubles play was a success for the Cyclones, putting them ahead of the Jayhawks early on. No. 1 duo senior Ksenia Pronina and sophomore Sami Budai earned a 6-4 win to start the rally over Maria Belen Luduena and Alexis Czapinski. Senior Meghan Cassens and junior Ana Gasparovic again teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles, taking down Smith Hinton and Madison Harrison, 7-6, to clinch the first team point of the match for Iowa State. The No. 3 match was abandoned, tied at six.
Kansas made a comeback during singles play, with wins a No. 5 and No. 1 coming quickly for the Jayhawks. At the No. 5 slot, senior Caroline Andersen fell, 6-2, 6-2, to Rachel McNeely, tying up the team score, quickly followed by a loss for Budai at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2, to Maria Belen Luduena.
Galvis, a 2014 transfer from Lindsey Wilson College, has been a crucial singles player for ISU this spring. The Cucuta, Colombia, native, took down Summer Collins, 7-6, 6-4, to keep the Cyclones afloat late in the match.
Pronina and Cassens were both up one set, before suffering second- and third-set losses. Pronina fell, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 2 slot to Hinton, while Cassens fell at No. 3, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, to Harrison.
Iowa State will take on Kansas State (7-9, 1-2 Big 12) in Manhattan, Kansas, on Sunday. The Wildcats broke a three-match losing streak when they conquered West Virginia at home on Friday, 4-0. Two of K-State's three singles wins were first-ever Big 12 victories, for sophomore Tegan Louw and freshman Carolina Costamagna.
Kansas State is 5-2 at home this spring. The match is set to begin on Sunday at 11 a.m.
