DES MOINES- The Iowa State tennis team fell to Drake, 4-1, on Friday in Des Moines in the first of a three-match weekend at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The Cyclones (3-6, 0-1 Big 12) will attempt to bounce back on Saturday in matches against Wyoming and UMKC.
The Bulldogs snagged the doubles point in wins at the No. 2 and 3 slots, where the Cyclones had switched up the lineup. Junior Ana Gasparovic, back from a hand injury, paired up with senior Meghan Cassens at No. 3 doubles. The duo fell to Jordan Eggleston and Tess Herder to clinch the early point for Drake.
Budai came out swinging at No. 1 singles, taking down Mariel Ante, 6-3, 6-1, and tying the score for the Cyclones. Drake answered with wins at No. 5 and 6 singles from Adrienne Jensen, 6-2, 6-4, over sophomore Natalie Phippen, and Lea Kozulic, 6-2, 6-1, over senior Caroline Andersen.
Cassens' win streak came to an end at No. 3 singles, with Maddie Johnson taking the win, 6-3, 6-3, and clinching the match for the Bulldogs. Cassens had won four in a row for the Cyclones prior to today's match.
The Cyclones will be back at it Saturday morning, taking Wyoming at 10 a.m., followed by UMKC at 4 p.m.
