AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State closed out its in-state opponents UNI in five innings Wednesday evening, taking down the Panthers 12-4 at the Cyclone Sports Complex. ISU's record is now 19-11, and the Panthers fall to a record of 12-17.
ISU lead in the first inning 2-1 and kept getting runs every inning but the third. Lexi Slater led the Cyclone attack with a 3-for-4 evening with four RBIs, while Nychole Antillon had her first career multi-RBI game with three runs driven in.
Start of the Game
The Panthers' Kristin Lock led with an RBI-single to get her team on the board first, leading the Cyclones 1-0. Cyclones took back their home advantage after some wild UNI pitching to lead 2-1 after the first inning. Brittany Gomez, who led off the inning with a single, came home on a Chelsea Ross wild pitch and Maddie Reese drove in the go-ahead run with a RBI-single.
Johnson Keeping UNI Scoreless
Iowa State made sure to keep the Panthers scoreless for three innings after their first run in the first inning. Katie Johnson struck out two in the third inning and kept UNI off the boards for the three innings.
Cyclones kept UNI off the board even after the Panthers loaded the bases in the fourth inning. Julia Hunter got a double while Samantha Olson recorded a single and Stephanie Wnek a walk, but Johnson got Micalla Rettinger to line out to short to get ISU out of the jam.
Slater and Antillon Deliver
The Cyclones put up three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth. ISU had players on second and third, when Lexi Slater broke out a squeeze bunt to bring across the first run of the inning. Nychole Antillon blooped a hit it to right field to get two more runs in for the Cyclones to up the lead to 8-1 after four.
UNI Tries to Get Back in the Game
UNI hit the only home run of the game in the first half of the fifth inning via relief pitcher Alyssa Buchanan with runners on first and second. The shot over the left field wall, gave UNI three runs to cut the ISU advantage to 8-4. Stacy Roggentien came into the circle for the Cyclones and got the final out of the inning without any further damage.
ISU's Heavy Hitters Complete the Game
At the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Cyclones kept loading the bases. Aly Cappaert brought in the first run with a bases-loaded walk. Slater drove in her fourth run of the game with an RBI-single to left-center to up the Cyclone advantage to 10-4. Reese chopped one back to the circle, but Buchanan's throw home for the force was over catcher Anna Varriano and Bingham slid home safely to make it 11-4. Antillon wrapped up the game with a grounder to second, but it was enough to bring home Cappaert and give Iowa State the 12-4 win.
On Deck
The Cyclones will take on No. 5 Oklahoma this Friday at 6:30 p.m., with a doubleheader starting Saturday at noon to close out ISU's first Big 12 series of 2015.
