IRVING, Texas – Iowa State women's soccer senior Haley Albert was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of Week, while sophomore Lindsey Hendon earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after leading the Cyclones to a 2-0 record to kick off the 2015 season, the league announced Tuesday.
Albert, a senior from Eureka, Missouri, netted two goals for Iowa State on the weekend. Albert buried the first goal of the season for the Cyclones on Friday after placing a corner kick from freshman Taylor Wagner into the back of the net. The goal also proved to be the game winner as Iowa State went on to win 1-0 over South Dakota State.
Albert didn't let up as she drilled a header off another corner kick to score against South Dakota as the Cyclones went on to win 3-0. With the win, Iowa State sits atop of the conference as the only team with a 2-0 record. Her two goals also place her first in the Big 12 in goals and points. Albert's weekly offensive honor is the first for the Cyclones since Jennifer Dominguez captured one on Oct. 9, 2012.
Hendon on the other hand, was the only goalkeeper in the Big 12 to post two shutouts on the weekend. She currently sits at second in the Big 12 with seven total saves. Iowa State's wins over South Dakota State and South Dakota were the sophomore's first two collegiate starts.
Albert and Hendon's weekly honors mark the first time in ISU history the team has grabbed Big 12 offensive and defensive honors in the same week.
Iowa State returns to the field on Friday, when it takes on Long Beach State in Long Beach, California, on Friday at 9:30 p.m. CT.
