AMES, Iowa – The Cyclones have gotten contributions from the freshmen class in nearly every position on the field. Iowa State has plenty of experience in the midfield with the senior duo of Lindsay Frank and Haley Albert along with junior Brianna Johnson. This creates the perfect environment for freshman Taylor Wagner to start in the final midfield spot and develop.
Wagner is an Overland Park, Kansas, native that was a two-time all-state first team selection in high school. The freshman midfielder picked up right where she left off her high school career. In the season-opener against South Dakota State, she assisted Haley Albert for the game-winning goal on a perfect corner kick. Wagner has started every game as a Cyclone and scored her first goal against Colorado College when she was in the perfect position to finish off a perfect pass from Koree Willer.
Cyclones.com caught up with the freshman midfielder.
Why did you choose Iowa State?
I knew they have good kinesiology and science programs, so I looked into that. The have really good fans here and I felt that playing here would be really sweet.
What are you looking forward to the most this freshman year?
I'm looking forward to getting to know more people. I'm a people person.
What is going to be your toughest adjustment coming to Iowa State?
Probably juggling classes and athletics all into one will be the toughest adjustment for me at Iowa State. I'm very independent now, so it will be interesting to see how that all goes.
What style of play do you have on the soccer field?
I like to keep the ball. I like possession. I tend to have good vision and I like to switch the point of attack and keep the ball moving.
What soccer team do you like to watch?
I just really like watching Barcelona play. They are just a lot of fun to watch and it is cool to see how they play.
What is your favorite soccer memory?
After state one year, the team all camped out on the field. It was a really cool and fun experience with them.
What is your favorite hobby?
I am a big fan of photography and in particular film photography.
The midfield position dictates a lot on the soccer field, similar to a point guard on a basketball team. Taylor Wagner plays like a point guard. She puts together shifty moves to get past defenders and has a knack for finding the open teammate and getting them the ball with pinpoint accuracy. It will be exciting to see how Taylor Wagner continues to improve.
Cyclones.com will be introducing the rest of the freshmen newcomers throughout the season.
