AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team is hitting the road again and the Cyclones will travel to the state of Colorado for a pair of contests. On Friday, Iowa State (3-1-0) takes on Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at 5 p.m. CT. The Cyclones close out the trip taking on Colorado on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Last time out
The Cyclones are coming off of a trip to California where they went 1-1. Iowa State dropped the first game of the trip to Long Beach State by the score of 2-1. The 49ers took a two-goal lead, but the Cyclones didn't quit and junior Lauren Roeling found the back of the net in the 84th minute. Iowa State had multiple chances in the final minutes but couldn't level the contest. In the second game of the trip, Iowa State defeated No. 10 Pepperdine, 1-0. Freshman Klasey Medelberg scored her first goal of her career and the lone goal of the game in the 50th minute that proved to be the game-winner. It was the first goal conceded this season by the Waves and it was Iowa State's first win over a top-10 foe.
Scouting the Tigers
The Cyclones and Tigers meet Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Stewart Field in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Colorado College (1-2-0) is on a two-game losing streak after winning their season opener over Northern Colorado, 1-0. Senior Sarah Schweiss is a lethal weapon for the Tigers. Although the forward is scoreless in 2015, Schweiss led the Tigers in nearly every offensive category with 10 goals and 24 points on 82 total shots.
What to watch for
The key thing to watch for in this match is how the Cyclones keep the offense rolling. The Cyclones have found a way to tally a goal in all four contests to start the season. The midfield has come up big for Iowa State early in 2015 by making a presence on the offensive end of the pitch. Iowa State got its first goal from a forward when Klasey Medelberg headed in the game-winner against Pepperdine.
Scouting the Buffaloes
The Cyclones and the Buffaloes (2-1-1) kick off on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Boulder, Colorado. The former Big 12 foe, Colorado, holds an all-time series lead of 12-2-1 over Iowa State. Colorado's only loss of the year came on the road against No. 11 BYU. The Buffaloes are being led by Brie Hooks. Hooks leads the team in goals with two and shares the team lead in assists with two. Senior Kate Scheele is the leader at the goalkeeper position, but sophomore Scout Watson has played 90 minutes over the course of two games and is yet to allow a goal.
What to watch for
The key matchup in this game will be how Iowa State's back line handles the Buffaloes' balanced attack. Colorado has had seven players score for them already this season. Look for Iowa State's strong back line of Sasha Stinson, Kourtney Camy, Madi Ott and Emily Steil to step up and shut the Colorado attack down. The back line only allowed two shots on goal against No. 10 Pepperdine last weekend. If the Buffaloes find their way around the back line, they will still have to get the ball past Big 12 goals-against average leader Lindsey Hendon, who is also second in the league with 15 saves.
