Student-Athletes Of The Month Announced

AMES, Iowa – Four Cyclone Student-Athletes have been honored for their hard work and dedication to making strides in the classroom during the month of September, the Iowa State Office of Student-Athlete Development announced today. Liera Bender (tennis), Reggan Northrup (football), Mitchell Meyers (football) and Grace Gibbons (cross country) are the honorees.
Bender, a redshirt sophomore from Urbandale, Iowa, is majoring in psychology. She said that planning ahead and keeping in touch with her coaches and teachers has helped her excel in her academics.
"My biggest tip would be to plan, plan, plan," Bender said. "I've learned that keeping a planner as well as using reminders on my phone have really helped me stay on top of things. I also learned that communication between your advisors, coaches and professors is very important and can really help you in the long run."
Northrup, also a redshirt sophomore, is majoring in criminal justice. The Jacksonville, Florida, native said his career goals include entering the law enforcement field.
"With all that is going on in the nation today, I want to be able to make a difference and help people trust the law rather than fear its enforcers," Northrup said of his aspirations.
Meyers, who hails from The Woodlands, Texas, is majoring in supply chain management. The redshirt senior said putting in extra work has been important to his academics success.
"My key to success in the classroom is always going the extra mile to make sure I understand the material," Meyers said.
Gibbons, a native of Gilbert, Iowa, is currently a redshirt freshman.
"My favorite class this semester is accounting because I find it very interesting looking at how businesses operate," Gibbons said.
The Iowa State OSAD's Student-Athlete of the Month program was implemented by Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services Patrice Feulner. Student-athlete development staff members who oversee each sport submit nominations and the staff votes on the monthly winner.
