WACO, Texas - The Iowa State soccer team (9-6-1, 3-3-1 Big 12) defeated the No. 24 Baylor Bears (11-5-1, 4-2-1 Big 12) 1-0 in overtime on a Klasey Medelberg golden goal on Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
Turning Point of the Game
After 102 minutes of scoreless action, freshman Hannah Cade got the ball and attacked the open space in Baylor's half of the pitch. Cade played an advancing pass into the Bear's 18 and sophomore Klasey Medelberg was able to out-pace the Baylor defender and beat her to the ball. Medelberg collected the pass cleanly and buried the game-winning golden goal.
The Cyclones battled for the full 103 minutes of action tonight and junior goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon made some incredible plays. In the first overtime period, Baylor looked like they were going to end the game when Lauren Piercy got to the end line and played the ball in front of the net to a wide open Ashley York. Hendon had perfect positioning and came up with the game-saving play. Junior defender also made crucial clear off the goal line at the end of the first overtime.

Lindsey Hendon. It would be easy to give the honor to Medelberg, but the junior goalkeeper made save-after-save to keep the Cyclones in the game. Hendon added to her school-record in season shutouts by bringing her tally to nine. She is also tied for fourth in Iowa State history with nine goalkeeper wins this season. Hendon would give a lot of credit to the whole team, especially her back line for battling the whole game.
Coach Said It
"It is always a tough battle against Baylor," head coach Tony Minatta said. "They are a very well-coached team and they built a great program here. Their players just compete very hard, but tonight our players matched that competitiveness. It went back-and-forth. They had some great opportunities, but so did we. Hendon came up with a huge save in the first overtime and Sasha cleared one off the line on a corner to keep us in it. Then Hannah Cade attacks in and plays a great ball. Klasey was able to out-pace their defender and had a great finish for the game-winner."Â
"It just shows the resolve of the team coming off a tough overtime loss to Drake and we were disappointed. We came out tonight and got us back in it. Gave ourselves our third conference win and we are moving forward in a really good position. So I'm very excited about where we are at, but we're not done yet and we will continue to move forward. We have two games left and we have UNI on Sunday, which will be a tough game."
