10.20.2016 | Soccer
Ames, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team (8-6-1, 2-3-1 Big 12) returns to Big 12 action when they travel to Waco, Texas, to take on the No. 24 Baylor Bears (11-4-1, 4-1-1 Big 12) Friday night at 7 p.m. The Cyclones will then close out non-conference play on Sunday when they take on UNI (8-5-3, 2-1-2 Missouri Valley) in Waterloo, Iowa.
Last Time Out
The Cyclones suffered a heartbreaking loss on Tuesday night to in-state foe Drake, 1-0. Iowa State outshot the Bulldogs 23-8 with nine shots on goal, but just weren't able to get the ball in the back of the net. The game went to overtime scoreless, and in the 103rd minute, Drake took advantage of a Cyclone miscue. Senior defender Madi Ott went to play the ball back to the goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon but didn't get a good foot on it. Drake forward Kayla Armstrong happened to be in position to intercept the errant pass and she buried the golden goal.
Scouting the Bears
The Bears will most likely be the most athletic team that the Cyclones will play this season. Baylor is known to markup, which could make it difficult for the Cyclone offense to get much space. Baylor has been hot of late and is riding a three-game conference win streak that has moved them up to second in the conference and also into the top-25.
Offensively, sophomore Lauren Piercy leads the charge. Piercy was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team and has played up to that honor with six goals and a pair of assists. Alongside her is fellow sophomore Sarah King. King has tallied four goals this season and has also dished out five assists.
In goal, Sara Martinson has allowed nine goals this season, but six of those nine goals have come in conference play where the Bears have allowed at least one goal in five of six games against Big 12 opponents.Â
What to Watch For
The Cyclone offense needs to be revitalized after being shutout at home against Drake. The Cyclones were able to get off a high volume of shots, but they will need to better at connecting passes against Baylor to find those open looks.
Scouting the Panthers
The Panthers look to simply outscore their opponents with their offensive presence. UNI has tallied 27 goals this season and are led by junior Sarah Brandt with six goals. After Brandt, UNI has a balanced offensive threat with 11 fellow Panthers also in the scoring column.Â
In goal, two different goalkeepers have played substantial minutes. Sophomore Maddie Lesjak has spent the most time in frame of late and she sports a goals-against average of 0.94 to go with her 40 saves on the season.
What to Watch For
Iowa State needs to come out attacking and send a message to UNI. The Panthers have allowed 23 goals this season for an average of 1.44 per game. Look for freshman midfielder Hannah Cade to pick apart the UNI defense and give the Cyclones plenty of scoring opportunities.
Neither of Iowa State's games against Baylor nor UNI will be streamed. Fans can also follow Iowa State Soccer's Twitter account (@cycloneSCR) for live updates on the game. Check Cyclones.com for results and a recap after the conclusion of the game.
