FORT WORTH, Texas – Iowa State got back into winning form on Saturday when they swept TCU 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-19) at the University Recreation Center. The win moved ISU to 11-9 on the year and 3-5 in Big 12 play. TCU is now 10-9 on the year and 3-6 in conference competition.
Iowa State hit. 294 as a team while restricting TCU to a .073 hitting clip. Grace Lazard and Jess Schaben paced the ISU offense with nine kills each. Hali Hillegas led the back row with 14 digs, while Monique Harris had a double-double of 18 assists and 12 digs.
ISU Hangs on to Take Set One
The first set played out evenly in the early proceedings, with both teams able to build up two-point leads, but struggling to find the three-point advantage. ISU was the first to get there with Samara West firing a kill off the top of the block to get ahead 13-10. The Frogs quickly erased the deficit to 14-14, but TCU's offense misfired ISU back ahead by three at 17-14. TCU smartly deployed its tip shots to get back into the set at 22-21 ISU, and eventually cut it back to 23-23. However, ISU got home as Grace Lazard fired down to bring up set point, which was converted when Natalie Gower fired wide at 25-23 ISU.
Iowa State Offense Guides Way to 2-0 Lead
The Iowa State offense hit .333 in the first, and continued the good play early in set two, moving out to an early 6-2 advantage. Despite the offense continuing to hum, the Cyclones allowed TCU to keep within range with a plethora of service errors, as five of TCU's first 11 points came via ISU serving the ball long. However, the Cyclones' dominance on offense eventually brought the set home, with Jess Schaben in particular getting hot. Set point came up at 24-17 on a Regan McGuire service error, and was converted on the second try when Alexis Conaway buried a kill on the slide at 25-18.
Mid-Set Run Ensures Sweep
Iowa State again got out to a big lead, but TCU was able to reel them in early, blocking their way to a 7-7 tie. However, Iowa State was able to power back ahead. Lazard and Schaben teamed up on some crucial blocks, while Monique Harris and Suzanne Horner continued to spread the wealth among the ISU attack to keep the Frogs off-balance. The run that put it away came around the media timeout, with ISU getting two before the media timeout, and the next three out of the break to make it 18-12 Cyclones. Conaway brought up match point at 24-19 on the slide, which was finished off on the first try when Gower's shot went long at 25-19.
