AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's and women's cross country teams are bound for Lubbock, Texas for the 2016 Big 12 Cross Country Championship at the Rawls Golf Course on Saturday. The women's 6k race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8k at 11 a.m.
The Cyclone men and women enter the conference meet in strikingly similar positions, as they are both the second-highest ranked team and will be looking to upset the favorites in this weekend's field. The No. 13 Iowa State men will be chasing No. 9 Oklahoma State, which has won eight-consecutive Big 12 titles. On the women's side No. 12 Baylor is considered the favorite, followed by No. 15 Iowa State and No. 18 Oklahoma State.
Saturday's conference meet will also give the Cyclones a look at some of their top competition in the upcoming NCAA Midwest Regional meet. The ISU women currently hold the No. 1 ranking in the Midwest, and will be running against No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Kansas and No. 7 Oklahoma. The Cyclones took hold of the No. 1 slot in the Midwest following a break-out performance at the stacked Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, where they finished eighth as a team in a field of 17 nationally-ranked squads.
The Iowa State men are looking to continue what has been their finest season under head coach Martin Smith. No. 13 The Cyclones, who started the season outside the USTFCCCA Top-30, have vaulted to their highest ranking since Oct. 14, 2008, when ISU was the No. 11 team in the nation. The Cyclone men also came away from the Wisconsin Invitational with an eighth-place finish.
The top men's and women's teams at this weekend's meet will be crowned league champions, while the top 15 individuals in each race are named all-conference.

Cyclone Notebook
*The Iowa State cross country teams will head to Lubbock, Texas for the 2016 Big 12 Championship on Saturday, Oct. 29. The women's race will start at 10 a.m. CT, with the men's race at 11 a.m.
*Iowa State is currently one of just six schools in the country to have its men's (No. 13) and women's (No. 15) cross country teams both ranked in the top 15 of the USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll.
*Ranked No. 13 nationally, the Iowa State men's cross country team has achieved the program's highest rankings since Oct. 14, 2008, when they were slotted as the No. 11 team in the country.
*The Iowa State women will be seeking to return to their winning ways at this year's conference meet. In 2015, a banged-up ISU squad had their run of four consecutive Big 12 titles ended. It was the second-longest such streak in conference history (Colorado - 9).
*The Iowa State men burst onto the national season at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 24. The Cyclones, who entered the meet unranked, finished second at the highly-touted Griak meet, which featured seven of the nation's top 30 teams.
*For the first time this season, the ISU women were able to use their full lineup at the Wisconsin Invitational. The depth paid dividends, as the Cyclones finished 8th in a field of 17 nationally-ranked teams.
*The Wisconsin Invitational was Cyclone junior Bethanie Brown's first cross country meet in nearly two years, dating back to a 53rd-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Championship.
*Thomas Pollard was the second freshman in the entire Wisconsin Invitational field to cross the finish line, clocking a 24:23 to place 25th as ISU's second finisher.
*Newcomers have been heavily depended upon for the Cyclone men. Freshmen Thomas Pollard and Andrew Jordan, as well as graduate transfer Kevyn Hoyos, have all been part of the ISU scoring effort at the past two meets.
*The Cyclone women reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in the Midwest Regional rankings for the first time this season after their strong outing at the Wisconsin Invitational.
*The Iowa State men are currently ranked No. 2 in the Midwest Region, only behind Big 12 favorites Oklahoma State.
