AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior soccer player Koree Willer has been named to the top-30 nominations for the Senior CLASS Award. CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School and seniors are honored based on four categories: community, classroom, character and competition.
Willer has been stellar throughout her entire Cyclone career both on and off the field. On the field, the First Team All-Big 12 forward has climbed in the school record books. She owns the top spot in career game-winning goals and her 22 goals in the cardinal and gold rank third all-time. With one more assist this season she will move into the top-five in career assists as well. She has battled an ankle injury so far during her senior campaign, but she is still tied for the team lead in goals.
In the classroom, Willer maintains a 3.9 GPA as a mechanical engineering student. She was honored for her work by being named the Big 12 Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2015-16.
"Koree Willer exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete," head coach Tony Minatta said. "She really shows what a determined individual can do as a student-athlete. She is in a really challenging major and maintains a 3.9 GPA since she's been at Iowa State as a mechanical engineer. She has made time for community service projects. She is on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Last spring she was named captain as voted on by her peers and has really done an excellent job of being there for her teammates both on and off the field as not just a mentor but as a friend. She is on pace to finish in the top-five in goals, points, and assists for her career here at Iowa State. Her story is not finished yet as we are marching towards a very successful end to her career."
A national media committee will now narrow down the lists of candidates to ten over the next month and those student-athletes will appear on the official ballot.
