KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Iowa State soccer team (10-8-1, 3-5-1 Big 12) fell to the Oklahoma Sooners (13-5-2, 5-3-1 Big 12) 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Swope Soccer Village in the second of four quarterfinal games of the Big 12 Championship to eliminate the Cyclones from the conference tournament.
Turning Point of the Game
After a 65-minute weather delay in the first quarterfinal matchup, the clouds opened up and the weather cleared up and it was a perfect day for soccer besides a few sprinkles before the start of the second half. Both teams were feeling each other out in the opening half with Oklahoma owning a slight majority of the possession and outshooting the Cyclones, 7-2.
The Cyclones came out with a strong start to the second half, earning three quick corner kicks and Emily Steil put a few shots on goal. In the 76th minute, Rachel Ressler came streaking into the box and drew a foul. Liz Keester stepped up to take the penalty kick and scored it. The Sooners came right back just two minutes later and Madison Saliba made it 2-0.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Freshman Marin Daniel. The Johnston, Iowa, native stepped in to start at the holding midfielder position after to fellow Cyclones were out today, with Kasey Opfer out due to injury and Lauren Roeling out due to illness. Daniel stepped in and played the full 90 minutes and made numerous defensive stops that led to good opportunities for Iowa State.
Coach Said It
"We got off to a slow start, but we defended hard," head coach Tony Minatta said. "We were able to limit their chances and we had some opportunities. We came out of the second half and we played very well. We were getting good opportunities. We were getting good crosses and a lot of corner kicks after we didn't have one in the first half. It was unfortunate in those last 15 minutes they got a break through the midfield. I didn't see it, but it was a tough time to have that penalty happen. Tough to recover form that, but we pressed all the way until the end and we got a lot of quality play out of quality players. We played without Hannah Cade, Lauren Roeling and Kasey Opfer, some key players that got us to this point, but I felt that our freshmen and everybody played incredibly well and put a lot of effort into it. We did what we had to do, and now we just have to wait until Monday and see if we are fortunate enough to get into the NCAA Tournament."
Game Notes
* Junior goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon recorded four saves.
