The showdown between Iowa State and Baylor has many implications. Both teams will be looking to sure up their NCAA Championship credentials. The Cyclones have the better RPI at No. 30, while Baylor enters with a better record at 21-9. The two teams will also be racing for third-place in the Big 12. Baylor is a game ahead at 9-5, but have a challenging finish ahead with conference champions Kansas visiting Waco on Saturday. Iowa State comes in at 8-6 and will be looking to get to 10 conference wins with the Cyclones welcoming Oklahoma to Hilton Coliseum on Saturday. An Iowa State win would also keep Kansas State, who is 8-7 in Big 12 play, with a shot at third-place on the final day.
The Cyclones saw their six-match winning streak come to an end at No. 4 Kansas on Saturday, but ISU fought valiantly, battling from 2-0 down to force a fifth set, which the Jayhawks took 15-9. ISU libero Hali Hillegas was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the fourth-straight week she has been either Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week or Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
The Bears are coming off a pair of five-set matches last week, falling at TCU in five sets but fighting off three match points at Oklahoma to take down the Sooners in five. Outside hitter Katie Staiger continues to be the workhorse for BU, leading the Big 12 with her 5.55 kills per set. She was the deciding factor when the Bears won in Ames back on Oct. 19, recording 27 kills and 15 digs in the win. Baylor will be looking for its first season sweep of Iowa State since 2004.
