AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State offense had its best evening of the season as ISU swept Oklahoma 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-14) Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State closes the regular season 18-10 overall and finishes third in the Big 12 at 10-6. Oklahoma finishes 2016 with a 14-15 record, 5-11 in Big 12 play.
The Cyclone offense hit .441 on Senior Night, the first time Iowa State has eclipsed the .400 barrier since hitting .433 at West Virginia in 2012. Jess Schaben led the attack with 12 kills, while Samara West got her nine kills at a .600 hitting percentage, and Grace Lazard got nine at .583. Hali Hillegas posted 10 digs in the win.
Dominant Offense Guides Iowa State in First Set
The teams were even throughout the early points, with Oklahoma taking the lead at 7-6. However, ISU went on a 6-1 run taking advantage of a trio of Sooner errors to push ahead 12-8. The Cyclone offense was dominant in the first frame, hitting .517 led by six kills from Jess Schaben. Iowa State would push its lead to as many as seven points in the set. Grace Lazard's kill brought up set point at 24-18, which was converted on second asking when Morgan Kuhrt went cross-court at 25-19 ISU.
ISU Hangs on to Go Up 2-0
The Cyclones got off to a slow start in the frame, allowing OU an early piece of the lead. A 4-0 run which included a pair of Suzanne Horner aces to make it 7-6 ISU. Iowa State was able to pull away from OU via another 4-0 run that included a pair of Samara West kills to make it 14-11. Oklahoma brought ISU back within one at 19-18 when Audrey Alford and Marion Hazelwood combined to deny Genesis Miranda, but that was as close as the visitors would get. West brought up set point at 24-22, and converted on first asking when Micaela Spann was denied by Lazard and Schaben at 25-22 Cyclones.
Iowa State Cruises to Sweep
Iowa State got the first three points of the third set and never looked back. The Cyclone advantage moved up to 8-3 in the third, as the Cyclone offense again dominated proceedings with a .469 hitting percentage in the set. The Iowa State advantage reached 12 points at 23-11 after a kill from Lazard. ISU got to match point at 24-13 and ended the regular season when West put away her ninth kill of the evening at 25-14 Cyclones.
Cyclone Notes
*Iowa State hit .441 as a team, the first time the Cyclones have hit over .400 in a match since at West Virginia in 2012. It is also tied for the 10th-highest team hitting percentage in a match in ISU history.
*ISU hit over .300 for the 11th time in 2016, the most in a season since ISU had 11 matches over .300 in 2011.
*Iowa State hit .517 as a team in the first set, the third time in 2016 the Cyclones have hit over .500 in a set, all three coming in the last two matches.
*Iowa State finished third in the Big 12 in 2016, the eighth-straight season the Cyclones have finished in the top-three of the conference.
*Jess Schaben led Iowa State with 12 kills, her sixth-straight match in double figures, 18th of the season and 37th of her career.
*Hali Hilllegas posted 10 digs, her 17th-straight match in double figures.
