NORMAN, Oklahoma – A balanced Iowa State attack led the Cyclones to a 3-1 (28-26, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20) win over Oklahoma Wednesday night at McCasland Field House. The win, ISU's season-high fifth in a row moved Iowa State to 15-9 overall and 7-5 in Big 12 play. OU is now 13-12 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
Six Cyclones recorded at least 10 kills, with Jess Schaben leading the way with 14 kills. Others with at least 10 were Morgan Kuhrt (13), Alexis Conaway (11), Samara West (11), Ciara Capezio (10) and Grace Lazard (10).
Iowa State Finally Cashes in to Take Set One
Some entertaining rallies highlighted the first, with both teams showing they had done their homework on knowing where to position the defense. After falling behind 12-9, ISU tied it at 12-12 on a Hali Hillegas ace, but some attack errors by the visiting Cyclones allowed OU to get back ahead at 17-13. However, ISU was able to find a 5-0 run on its own, with Grace Lazard showing off her versatility serving the run, and recording a pair of bump-set assists to move ahead 19-18. The teams battled to ties at 19s, 20s, 21s and 22s, but ISU got to set point first at 24-22, but Oklahoma tied it back up at 24-24 after a pair of ISU errors. Each team missed a chance at set point, before ISU got its fourth opportunity at 27-26, which was converted when Alyssa Enneking fired wide to give Iowa State the frame 28-26.
Sooners Rush Past Cyclones to Tie Match
Iowa State found itself in an early three-point gap, with the deficit eventually expanding to five points at 9-4. A Christy Johnson-Lynch timeout was effective in helping stop the gap from growing, but ISU could not string together the points for a comeback. OU eventually got up six at 14-8, but ISU was able to string some points together to cut the Sooner lead to three at 16-13. However, Oklahoma was able to pull away again, racking its lead back to six at 21-15. Set point came up at 24-19, which the Sooners put away on second asking when Lazard's serve sailed long at 25-20 OU.
Offense Allows ISU to Hang on in Set Three
Oklahoma again built up an early advantage, getting a three-point edge at 6-3. However, the ISU defense started making some plays with Lazard and Samara West teaming up for a block to tie it up at 7-7. ISU eventually got a lead with some room, as back-to-back Morgan Kuhrt kills made it 13-10 ISU. ISU continued to break ahead, with Ciara Capezio making plays on offense and defense to make it 16-11 ISU. The Cyclone offense continued to hum, hitting .375 in the set, but Oklahoma eventually got the Iowa State lead back down to a single point at 23-22. ISU got to set point at 24-22 on a Conaway kill, which was converted on the first asking when Schaben tooled the block to make it 25-23 ISU.
Miranda Leads ISU to Victory
The Sooners were strong again early, running off eight-straight points to get a 10-4 advantage. The Cyclone recovery was solid as ISU ran off a quick four points to cut the Oklahoma lead down to two points. Iowa State kept Oklahoma on its toes by spreading the ball around, with West getting a big kill to tie things up at 13-13. OU was able to get some breathing room with a 3-0 run to make it 19-16 Sooners. At 20-18 OU, Genesis Miranda subbed in for Capezio and took over. ISU took the lead at 21-20 when Conaway won a 50-50 at the net, got to match point at 24-20 on a Schaben kill and converted first try when Kimmy Gardiner's line shot went wide at 25-20.
