IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 25 Iowa State struggled to convert its chances as the Cyclones fell to Iowa 78-64 Thursday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The loss drops ISU to 6-3 on the season, while the Hawkeyes improve to 5-5. UI's victory also expanded the Hawkeyes' lead in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series to 10-7.
The Cyclones were down by as many as 17 points in the second half, but was able to cut the Hawkeye advantage to seven. However, ISU was made to rue its missed opportunities, as Iowa was able to put away the visiting Cyclones for its first win over the visitors from Ames since 2012.
Matt Thomas led five Cyclones in double figures with 14 points. Deonte Burton, Nazareth Mitrou-Long, Monté Morris and Nick Weiler-Babb all finished with 10 points.
How it Happened
The two sides traded the lead across the first five minutes, but the Hawkeyes were able to go on a 9-0 run to open up a 11-point advantage at 23-12. The Cyclones were able to hang tough, with Naz Mitrou-Long getting five-straight points to cut the UI advantage to 23-17, but Iowa was soon back ahead by double-digits and finished the first half with a Peter Jok 3-pointer to give the home team a 44-29 lead at the half.
The Cyclones struggled to reel Iowa in during the early portions of the second half. UI got ahead by 17 in its first possession of the half, and another Jok 3-pointer had the lead at 55-39. However, the Cyclones fought back with a 7-0 run in a little under 50 seconds to bring the Hawkeye advantage back to nine at 55-46. The bench helped lead the effort back into the contest, with Nick Weilber-Babb scoring seven-straight, and Darrell Bowie draining a 3-pointer to bring the Iowa advantage down to 58-51.
The scoreboard struggled for both teams, as Iowa was able to force itself back ahead by 10 at 63-53 on a Jordan Bohannan 3-pointer. The Hawkeyes grinded out a 7-0 run with back-to-back Isaiah Moss lay-ins helping return the home team's lead to 14 at 67-53. A corner 3-pointer from Matt Thomas took the Hawkeye advantage back down to single digits at 70-61 with 1:05 to play, but the Hawkeyes were able to keep their cool down the stretch to complete the victory.
Cyclones of Note
Matt Thomas finished the night as Iowa State's leading scorer, finishing with 14 points. His evening included two 3-pointers, moving him to 183 career 3-pointers, to tie his former head coach, Fred Hoiberg for fifth in school history.
Nick Weiler-Babb was crucial for Iowa State as the Cyclones tried to get back into the game. The junior got all 10 of his points in the second half.
